Στις 31, δημοσιεύονται οι καταγγελίες του ισχυρού μητροπολίτη του Τσκοντίντι («Georgian archbishop accuses Patriarch Ilia II of ‘pederasty..». «Influential priest accuses Georgian Patriarch».

    Ethnicity Georgians, Armenians

Criminal activities Arms trafficking, Assault, Bribery, Extortion, Fraud, Human trafficking, Illegal gambling, Kidnapping, Money laundering, Murder, Racketeering and, Theft.
The Georgian mafia (Georgian: ქართული მაფია) is regarded as one of the biggest, powerful and influential criminal networks in Europe, which has produced the biggest number of «thieves in law» in all former USSR countries and controls and regulates most of the Russian-speaking mafia groups.[citation needed][1] They are very active in Russia and Europe.

Georgian mafia is known as best organized and most ruthless criminal group,[citation needed][2] being very «structured» and «hierarchical». At the head of such a group is a leader who rarely appears in public and, in turn, reports to a «Godfather», who operates on an international level. The power of the leader is largely dependent on his ability to subordinate independent groups of thieves under his authority. His underlings oversee the activities of smaller Georgian criminal gangs. The pyramid is cemented by the payment of tributes to the leader of each group acting in the region. This is the so-called «common fund».[3]

It has two major criminal clans:[4][5][6]

    Tbilisi criminal clan
    Kutaisi criminal clan
Georgia always had a disproportionately high number of crime bosses and still has a majority of the 700 or so still operating in the post-Soviet space and western Georgia (Kutaisi clan) is particularly well represented.[7]

In some of its rules or «laws», the Georgian mafia parallels the Sicilian Mafia. There are differences but many things are similar.[8]

Cleric’s shocking claim in TV interview triggers political crisis in Georgia

    Archbishop Iakob of Bodbe. (1tv.ge)

TBILISI, DFWatch–In Georgia, the government is embroiled in a scandal involving the Orthodox Church, after a bishop claimed the government tried to depose the highly respected Patriarch Ilia II.

Iakob, Archbishop of Bodbe Diocese, made the incendiary claim during an appearance on Pirveli TV on Saturday.

During the interview, the bishop, who is reportedly a former spiritual counsellor of Bidzina Ivanishvili, said he was invited to the office of then-PM Giorgi Kvirikashvili to discuss the removal of Ilia II, the head of the Georgian church and an extremely popular person in the country.

If this should happen, Patriarch Ilia II would be replaced by Metropolitan Shio, his appointed heir, Archbishop Iakob said.

Also present at the meeting were Giorgi Gakharia, then minister of internal affairs and currently prime minister, as well as Vakhtang Gomelauri, head of the State Security Service, the archbishop claimed during the interview with TV Pirveli.

All three categorically deny the accusations.

Although the archbishop doesn’t indicate the exact time of the meeting, it dates back to sometime between December 2015 and June of 2018, during Giorgi Kvirikashvili’s tenure as prime minister.

The statement has caused a public outcry in Georgia, with some downplaying its significance, pointing out that the archbishop seemed to be under the influence of alcohol during the interview.

On Monday, however, Archbishop Iakob repeated his claims while talking with journalists, adding that Giorgi Gakharia was the person most relentlessly insisting on the Patriarch’s replacement. Although apologizing for his ranting tone and incendiary language during the interview, he nevertheless stood by his previous statements about the meeting at the PM’s office.

Iakob Iakobashvili is the Archbishop of Bodbe Diocese. Until recently, he held the dual positions of the Patriarch’s Chorbishop and the Chair of Finance and Economic Council the Patriarchate, the governing body of the Georgian Orthodox Church. He said he resigned from both positions on Monday.

Archbishop Iakob was a personal spiritual counsellor of Bidzina Ivanishvili, at least until 2010, MP Eka Beselia said.

Clergy and government officials responded with anger and fiercely denied all allegations.

There is now talk within the Church of convening the Holy Synod to discuss the issue. The Synod is a convention of metropolitans and bishops and among its responsibilities is sanctioning high-ranking clerics.

The scandal surrounding Archbishop Iakob’s statements echoes a long-standing chasm in the Church between various groups who are trying to exert control over this popular and lucrative institution.

In November, 2017, Ilia II appointed Metropolitan Shio Mujiri as his potential heir. Although the Holy Synod has the final say in electing the next Catholicos-Patriarch, the move was assumed to be an expression of the will of the spiritual leader of the Georgian Orthodox Church, which it would be practically impossible to ignore.

The scandal has further marred the image of the Georgian Orthodox Church, which still struggles with the repercussions of the “cyanide affair”, a murder plot involving high-ranking clerics. Nevertheless, according to the latest opinion polls, the Church is still regarded by the public as most reliable institution in the country.

Cleric ‘forcefully removed’ from Holy Synod after ‘indecent’ accusation against Georgia’s Patriarch

Petre Tsaava surrounded by journalists at the gates of Patriarchate where a session of the Holy Synod was held. (1tv.ge)

TBILISI, DFWatch–A session of the Holy Synod in Tbilisi has shocked the entire nation, as one of its members accused the spiritual leader and most popular person in the country, Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II, of “pederasty”.

The accusation was so obscene and sudden that the dozens of journalists awaiting the results of the meeting outside of the gates of the Patriarchate, were literally taken aback.

Petre Tsaava, an outspoken Metropolitan of the important Chkondidi diocese in Megrelia, Western Georgia, said upon his exit from the Patriarchate that he’d been unfairly dismissed from his position after he “exposed the Synod chair of pederasty”. When asked whether he meant Ilia II, the Patriarch, he answered “yes”.

“[Metropolitan] Petre acted so indecently at the Holy Synod session that we had to [forcefully] remove him,” Metropolitan Nikoloz of Akhalkalaki said, commenting on the situation at the session.

He said the Holy Synod stripped Petre Tsaava of his diocese and advised him to redeem in a monastery.

Ilia II Shiolashvili, the Catholicos-Patriarch and spiritual leader of Georgian Orthodox Christians, is regarded as venerable and powerful. Even slight criticism of him sparks mass outcry and sometimes street protests in his support. Therefore, accusations of homosexuality in a very conservative country have shocked many Georgians.

In addition to its classical definition as a sexual relationship between an adult man and a pubescent or adolescent boy, in Georgian the term “pederasty” is used as an offensive term for gay people. When asked by Mtavari Channel what he literally meant, Petre Tsaava responded that he meant the former.

The incident has gone so far that even PM Giorgi Gakharia saw it necessary to comment.

“The Patriarch of Georgia is a symbol of the spirituality of our country, of our past, present and future. [Petre Tsaava’s statements are] absolutely unacceptable and I am sure that every citizen of our country will stand by our Patriarch today,” Giorgi Gakharia said during his trip to Turkey.

Ilia II called a session of the Holy Synod after Archbishop Iakob of Bodbe publicly blamed both the current and former prime ministers of Georgia had plotted to depose the Patriarch.

Archbishop Iakob’s claim was also discussed at the session but he managed to escape harsh punishment and retained his diocese.

The Holy Synod is the ruling body and highest authority in the Georgian Orthodox Church and consists of bishops.

Georgian game of thrones – what’s happening in Georgian Orthodox Church?

TAMAR KADAGIDZE, TBILISI OCTOBER 30, 2019

According to one clergyman, the authorities, on behalf of the oligarch Ivanishvili, were going to overthrow Patriarch Ilia II

Last week, one of the most influential clergymen, Archbishop Jacob, accused the Georgian Prime Minister, as well as other senior officials, of trying to overthrow the head of the Georgian Orthodox Church, and high-ranking clergymen, of planning an attempt on the patriarch.

This sensational statement provoked a new church scandal that has engulfed the entire Georgian media.

    (….)

According to Archbishop Iakob, the executors of the murder of the patriarch were to have been member of the Holy Synod, Metropolitan of Chkondidi Petre and Archpriest Giorgi Mamaladze. However, he did not say specifically who from the government was planning the murder.

Archbishop Iakob said the meeting in the chancellery named the future patriarch of Georgia as Archbishop Shio [now the locum tenens of the patriarch, appointed to this post by the patriarch himself in November 2017. This status means that in the event of the Patriarch’s incapacitation or his death, it is Archbishop Shio who will lead the Georgian church].

Iakob says that Archbishop Shio was chosen because of his proximity to the Russian Orthodox Church and his ties with Russia.

During the interview, Iakob often used slang words and obscene expressions and expressed threats against the enemies of the patriarch. Therefore, many had the impression that the clergyman was drunk. However, the next day, Iakob publicly repeated his accusations.

Yakobashvili also mentioned Bidzina Ivanishvili, the informal ruler of the country.

The clergyman hints that it was on his orders that a plan to overthrow the patriarch was prepared: while expressing threats against whomever put out the alleged hit on the patriarch, he mentioned a man who “considers himself the leader of the country.”

The authorities categorically denied the accusations of Archbishop Iakob.

Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia called the accusations of the clergyman ‘stupid’ and said that such a meeting had never been held either in his office or elsewhere. Kvirikashvili and Gomelauri also denied the allegations.

Iakob is one of the more controversial figures of the Georgian church. Prior to the scandalous television interview with TV Pirveli, he served as the head of the Financial and Economic Council of the Patriarchate. The day after the interview, he resigned from both posts. However, Archbishop Iakob remains the Archbishop of Bodbe, and a member of the Holy Synod.

“Today we no longer have a church, it’s a financial mafia cartel”
Many do not believe in the veracity of Iakob’s story.

However, regardless of the validity of the allegations, theologians say that the Georgian Orthodox Church is going through one of the most dramatic periods in its history.

When the clergy, members of the Holy Synod, accuse each other of organizing murders, corruption, criminal showdowns and intrigues, this indicates serious problems in the church, experts say.

From the patriarchy, which has always been one of the most closed institutions in the country, a real information stream has poured out:

The priests on their own initiative call in on live broadcasts, tell crime stories to reporters, use foul language, threaten to tell secrets, write revealing letters about each other. Indirect accusations were made of “sodomy and pedophilia” reigning inside the church.

According to observers, this is an irreversible process that will continue in the future and the patriarchy will no longer be able to restrain this flow of information.

TAMAR KADAGIDZE, TBILISI OCTOBER 30, 2019

“Everyone blames each other, and this process should go to the end. Religious morality is not just a religious category, it is also a legal category, and therefore it is important for us. In the name of religious morality, the church appeals to the courts and forbids people to [use their] freedom of expression,” said Tamar Kordzaia, representative of the Republican Party.

She recalls the case of a Georgian condom-producing company, against which the patriarchy has filed a lawsuit for ‘insulting the feelings of believers’ because of the images on the packaging.

“There is no area where the patriarchy would not intervene in the name of religious morality. For years, the church has been fighting against equality and progress in the country, discriminating against people, telling them that if they are homosexual, they should not come out. But if they do it [are homosexual] themselves, we need to know about it,” says Kordzaia.

    The letter of the Archpriest

In the context of Jacob’s interview, a letter written by the prisoner Archpriest Mamaladze earlier this year became relevant again.

The content of the letter was never made public. It is only known that it contains a cascade of scandalous information. Starting with corruption and financial fraud of clergy, ending with “sodomy and pedophilia.”

At the same time, Archbishop Jacob declares that Giorgi Gakharia, as Minister of the Interior, gathered incriminating evidence on the clergy, secretly establishing observation of them.

Some of the journalists also confirm these words, based on their own sources. They say that they have information that in the hands of Gakharia there are a lot of scandalous videos with the participation of clergy.

One of the main topics of discussion now is whether Mamaladze’s letter should be published.

This issue has even split the liberal public.

Some believe that the letter should be published, because the flock has the right to know who ‘speaks on behalf of God.’

The Church’s influence on society is rather serious in Georgia. On 17th May 2013, dozens of LGBTIQ* activists organised the second Georgian International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. The group was confronted by more than 20.000 ultra-conservative protesters led by orthodox priests. Breaking through police barriers, these protesters violently chased the LGBTIQ* rights activists. At least 17 were injured. Although the Orthodox Church publicly condemned such violence, it urged the government not to promote LGBTIQ* rights, which they consider a “sin”. None of the priests have been convicted for their actions in the following years.

Scandalous statement by the Metropolitan of Poti and Khobi. Reverend Gregory said some people had offered to resign the Catholic Patriarch.

He responded to Inga Grigolia’s «Reaction» program in response to a question about a possible Russian footprint in the battle for the patriarchal throne.

“I cannot go into details, but I can say that a number of processes have developed. Starting from the history of Mamaladze to this day, and no matter how difficult it is, the fact is that there was an attempt to resign the Patriarch. There was such an offer as well, but thank God and thank God that the Patriarch did not go for it. You can’t even talk about it, ”Metropolitan Gregory said.

Church officials voted also to expel an outspoken renegade clergyman, Metropolitan Petre Tsaava.

Tsaava had been a thorn in the side of the church for years. He had clashed with the leadership in the past for, among other things, his management of the official church TV channel and, according to Gamrekelashvili, regularly spoke about corruption within the church, including allegations of vast wealth amassed by Ilia.

Tsaava also publicly supported Mamaladze’s earlier claims that Ilia’s secretary was behind the cyanide plot.

At the Synod meeting, during the discussion about what to do with Tsaava, clergymen began yelling and shouting, and the meeting nearly devolved into fighting, participants later told reporters.
One priest, Archbishop Nikoloz Pachuashvili, told RFE/RL’s Georgian Service that some priests had to physically protect Ilia from others.

Tsaava, Pachuashvili said, had to be escorted from the meeting by force.

Tsaava was not stripped of his priesthood, but he was ordered to serve part of his punishment in a monastery. And he was threatened with excommunication from the church if he continued to speak out.

Following the church’s decision to expel him, Tsaava then made an explosive accusation, broadcast live on Georgian TV.

“Today, the Holy Synod made an unprecedented decision and personally, the patriarch, the chairman of the Synod, I believe that he made an unjust decision in depriving me of the rank,” Tsaava said. “I think that this is because I uncovered the sin of sodomy and pederasty in the Georgian Orthodox Church.”

“The people have a patriarch, possessed by the sin of pederasty and sodomy, the chairman of the Synod,” he told.

New allegations against Georgian Orthodox Church as archbishop accused of sexual assault
6 NOVEMBER 2019 BY OC MEDIA

    Archbishop Zosime Shioshvili. Official picture.

New allegations of sexual misconduct have emerged against the clergy of the Georgian Orthodox Church. On Tuesday, Dusheti Archbishop Zosime Shioshvili was accused of sexually assaulting a male student at the Tbilisi Theological Academy in the 1980s, when he was rector of the institution.

The allegations come scarcely a week after accusations of homosexuality and molestation of ‘young men/boys’ were levelled against the head of the Church, Patriarch Ilia II.

The allegations against Shioshvili were made by Orthodox Priest Giorgi Skhiladze, who currently lives in France and does not fall under the authority of the Georgian Orthodox Church.

Skhiladze published a letter purportedly written by Shioshvili in 1988, in which the Archbishop tenders his resignation from his position as rector of the Tbilisi Theological Academy after his actions were discovered by other members of the Church at the academy.

The letter reads that the lecturer is leaving his position ‘forever because of the students’ demand’ and says that he should be prosecuted under criminal law if he violates this pledge.

Skhiladze noted that instead of taking punitive measures, Patriarch Ilia II instead promoted Shioshvili while he, and others who had helped to expose Shioshvili, were expelled from the academy.

    ‘I couldn’t sleep for nights’
After Skhiladze’s accusations, Georgian online publication Tabula published a letter allegedly written by the student sexually assaulted by Archbishop Shioshvili.

According to the letter, the student was enrolled in the Academy in 1988. It describes how he noticed that Zosime Shioshvili was treating him with warmth, which turned into sexual harassment and sexual assault.

‘Zosime came up behind me, wrapped his hands around me, and kissed my head. I blushed and was choked with anger’, the letter reads. It continues by describing how Shioshvili complimented him, calling him ‘my diamond’, before taking him to the kitchen and forcibly kissing him.

‘I was afraid of what I might do to this pervert’, the student wrote. ‘I was afraid I would be discovered. Somehow I managed to get rid of him. I left and then I couldn’t sleep for nights’.

Skhiladze’s allegations were confirmed by another figure in the Church, archpriest Zakaria Peradze, who currently serves in Cyprus. He told Mtavari Arkhi on 5 November that the student, who was ‘very religious’, changed so much after his encounter with Shioshvili that they could barely recognise him.

He said that even though Shioshvili resigned from his post, he was promoted within the Church hierarchy shortly thereafter, at the direction of the KGB.

Skhiladze also told Mtavari Arkhi that they notified other religious figures about Shioshvili’s behaviour. This included the Patriarch’s cousin, Dimitri Shiolashvili, currently a Metropolitan Bishop of the Batumi eparchy, who was a priest and lecturer at the academy at the time.

Shiolashvili reportedly told them that he already knew about the allegations.

‘It came out that not only father Dimitry, but other religious figures also knew about Zosime. Some said, ironically, that when they started to tackle the issue, nobody supported them and thus, they wouldn’t try it now’, Skhiladze said. ‘This is how they left us alone to face the KGB.’

Skhiladze told Radio Tavisupleba that several days after they informed Dimitri Shiolashvili of the allegations, he and three others who had reported Shioshvili were expelled from the academy.

He added that they had to inform ‘as many influential people about it as possible in order not to be killed’.

He said that they informed Zviad Gamsakhurdia, Georgia’s first president, who at the time was the leader of the national movement opposing Soviet rule. Gamsakhurdia, he said, then, publicly disclosed the allegations.

He added that he officially addressed the Church about the allegations against Shioshvili in 2006, but never received an answer. He also said that he had tried to make the letter’s contents public many times before, but that only now had it caught the media’s attention.

Skhiladze said that the student who was allegedly sexually assaulted currently lives in France and could attest to the veracity of the letter.

    Denying the accusations
On Tuesday, Archbishop Shioshvili vociferously denied the allegations, calling them ‘slander’. He added that he did not know either the accuser or the alleged victim.

As for why he resigned, he told Mtavari Arkhi that the reason was a confrontation with politically active students who claimed that he ‘did not support the national movement’.

The Georgian Patriarchate has not officially responded to the allegations against the Archbishop.

On Wednesday they published a statement titled ‘The position of the Georgian Patriarchate’, in which they declared their opposition to screenings of ‘And Then We Danced’ in Tbilisi, a queer drama about a romance between two Georgian folk dancers.

Though the statement does not directly mention accusations against the Patriarch and Archbishop Shioshvili, it nevertheless states that it was not ‘accidental’ that the film screenings were announced after ‘the developments’ which followed the meeting of the Holy Synod on 31 October, in which the Ilia II was accused of homosexuality and molestation.

The same day, the Eparchy of Stilkani and Dusheti, which Archbishop Shioshvili heads, posted on Facebook supporting him, and calling on the Church to take measures against slander.

‘The person in whose name these “priests” are talking asked for forgiveness for his false accusations a long time ago’, said the statement.

They added that had Shioshvili been caught committing such a ‘sin’, it would be impossible not to happen again.

Later, the accused Archbishop responded to the accusations directly, saying that the timing of the allegations was important.

‘Why not before and why only after his holyness [the Patriarch] was accused? Only when some people think that the Patriarchal throne is shaken?’, he said.

The Church’s chief spokesperson, Andria Jagmaidze, said that accusations against the Archbishop were ‘an orchestrated attack on the Church’. He told TV Pirveli that they expected more accusations like these, but that they were all ‘unfounded’ and that there was no proof.

Crisis strikes Georgia’s influential church as succession looms
The church is rocked by “sodomy” allegations, power struggles and a poisoning conspiracy.

Patriarch Ilia II is not a name to take in vain in the fervently devout Christian nation, where the church has a say in everything from local issues to foreign affairs (Georgian Patriarchate’s Facebook page)
An angry archpriest, his clerical headgear disheveled, stormed out of the holy see of the Georgian Orthodox Church and declared that the church leader, Patriarch Ilia II, was a “sodomite” and “pederast.” The archpriest, Bishop Petre of Chkondidi, then waded through a crowd of journalists and drove off in a huff, leaving a national scandal in his wake.

Fellow archpriests soon emerged from the October 31 meeting of the Holy Synod, an executive council of the church, and reported that they had to physically restrain Petre as he tried to attack the frail, 86-year-old patriarch. “His actions were so disgraceful that we had to remove him by force from the meeting,” said one of the clerics, Bishop Nikoloz of Akhalkalaki and Kumurdo.

Both the journalists on the scene and their audiences across Georgia had to take a moment to process what they had just seen and heard.

Patriarch Ilia II is not a name to take in vain in the fervently devout Christian nation, where the church has a say in everything from local issues to foreign affairs. Even political leaders at the highest level seek the blessing of the veteran pontiff, whom most Georgians see as a divine, fatherly figure.

No cleric has ever shown open disrespect for Ilia, let alone claim, like Petre did, that the patriarch was personally “afflicted by the sin of sodomy.” The Georgian church is known for its hostility toward homosexuality and regularly promotes homophobia.

Government officials, fully aware of the influence of the patriarch, took turns to register their respects. “The Georgian patriarch is a symbol uniting Georgia’s past, present and future,” said Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia. “Such unimaginable attacks on the patriarch, our spiritual symbol, amount to attacks on our country, our statehood.”

Petre’s outburst brought to a boil a long-simmering conflict in the church, including allegations of government conspiracy to remove the ailing patriarch and one priest’s plot to poison his aide. Church analyst Beka Mindiashvili said that Georgia is witnessing an intensifying struggle for succession. “It all boils down to that,” Mindiashvili told Eurasianet.

The struggle could have far-reaching consequences for Georgian politics, both domestic and foreign. “It is obvious that political forces have their preferred candidates [for the next patriarch],” said Kornely Kakachia, the director of the Georgian Institute of Politics, a Tbilisi think tank. “It is evident from the different takes television channels have on this,” he said.

Broadcast media is largely divided into pro-government and pro-opposition camps in Georgia. The former, like the government, appears to support the patriarch, while the latter has given favorable coverage to Petre.

Patriarch Ilia II appears to have groomed an heir apparent, a 48-year-old Bishop Shio, but other senior clerics have also set their sights on the position. This group is believed to include Bishop Iakobi of Bodbe, himself the center of another dramatic church scandal.

In a recent interview, Iakobi claimed that top government officials asked him to help expedite the transfer of power from Ilia II to Shio.

Iakobi also attended the scandalous Synod meeting, where he said that he asked for the patriarch’s forgiveness for the crude language he had used in his public statements. But he stuck to his guns regarding his claims of conspiracy against the patriarch, additionally claiming that Gakharia and Bishop Shio favor friendlier ties with Moscow, Georgia’s main foe.

Based on such statements, some observers believe that the ongoing holy wars are not just a domestic affair. “Not just political, but geopolitical forces have their stakes in this,” Mindiashvili said.

Despite the intractable territorial conflict between the two countries – Moscow heavily backs two breakaway regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia – many Georgian clerics see a natural ally in Russia, which shares the Orthodox Christian faith with Georgia. They fear that Western-style liberal democracy will be bad for the influence of the church in Georgia and tend to oppose the government’s Western integration agenda.

“No matter who wins, an about-face in foreign policy is unlikely, but if the pro-Russia camp prevails in the church, the process of cozying up to Moscow will intensify,” Kakachia said.

    Truth to power?

Infighting in the church has become increasingly public since the uncovering of a poisoning conspiracy two years ago. Petre has long insisted on the innocence of archpriest Giorgi Mamaladze, who is now serving a prison sentence for attempting to put cyanide in the coffee cup of the patriarch’s personal secretary, whom many see as the true power behind the aging patriarch’s throne.

Petre’s outspoken expressions of support for the convicted priest put him at odds with the patriarch and his supporters. The disgraced bishop pushed the Holy Synod to issue a petition asking for Mamaladze’s pardon. The Holy Synod did eventually issue the petition on October 31, but the discussion nevertheless got out of hand.

According to other senior clerics at the meeting, Petre lost his cool after Ilia II relieved him of his pastoral duties and prescribed for him a life of repentance in a remote monastery. Many dismissed his claims of homosexuality, taking them as a burst of anger after having been fired, but some prelates took a more cautious line.

“I have no reason to trust or distrust his statements,” said Bishop Anthon of Vani and Baghdadi. “I respect the prelate but he needs to present proof,” said Bishop Saba of the North America Diocese.

News and social media erupted in an animated and unprecedentedly open debate on homosexuality and the power struggle in the Church. Many clergy members spoke up for the spiritual leader, but a few prominent clerics also took open swipes at the patriarch.

“John the Golden-Mouthed was also dismissed for speaking the truth,” said Father Andria in support of Petre, in comments to the television network Mtavari Arkhi. Andria – the head of a monastery, Chkondidi, which was under Petre’s diocesan jurisdiction – added that years of deference by lay and clerical authorities have created a personality cult around the patriarch, making his actions impervious to public scrutiny.

Some LGBTI Georgians felt vindicated by the talk of homosexuality in the notoriously homophobic Georgian church. But LGBTI advocacy groups criticized the use of homosexuality as a slur. “Let’s not forget that we live in a secular state, where homosexuality is not a crime, let alone a sin,” said Equality Movement, an LGBTI rights group, in a statement.

All the power play, scandals and mud-slinging in the church are painful for Georgia’s faithful to watch. Many took to social media to share support and prayers for their beloved patriarch. Ilia II appeared at a sermon on November 3 to thank believers for the support and departed to ovations from the crowd gathered in the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi.

In a propitious coincidence, as the patriarch was making his exit two jets flew high over Tbilisi, leaving contrails in a shape of cross in the sky. Georgian believers, wont to see omens and miracles, shared the video of vapor trails across the internet, interpreting the celestial cross as yet more evidence of the patriarch’s divine nature.

One of the top Georgian specialists on the GOC, Gocha Mirtskhulava, told this author that, in 2017, Russia sent a close confidante of Moscow Patriarch Kiril—Bishop Hilarion Alfeyev, a chairperson of the Department of External Church Relations and a permanent member of the Russian Orthodox Church Holy Synod—to transmit a message to the Georgian patriarch that Moscow would support Shio Mujiri as heir to the patriarchal throne in Georgia. “Metropolitan Shio is well known for his pro-Russian aspirations. Not only did he study in Russia and does not support Ukraine’s autocephaly, but he also has close business ties to his childhood friend Levan Vasadze—a Georgian businessman famous for his anti-Western rhetoric and fundamentalist views,” Mirtskhulava said (Author’s interview, July 6).

The expert further recalled that Vasadze has close relations with Russian ultranationalist “philosopher” Alexander Dugin, the founder of the “Eurasianist” movement who promotes Russian expansion and Russia’s superior spiritual (i.e., Christian Orthodox) and political role on the Eurasian continent. Dugin believes that Eurasia should become a federation of countries led by Russia. For his role in Crimea’s annexation and his actions against Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, Dugin was sanctioned by the United States.

Mirtskhulava stressed that almost all members of the GOC’s Holy Synod have close links to Russia or the Russian Church. “I am absolutely sure that at the top of the Georgian Orthodox Church, there is no ‘pro-Western group’ now. This does not mean there are no [Georgian] hierarchs who share Western values, who are pro-American or pro-European; but they have no organization because pro-Western hierarchs currently have no leader,” the expert underlined (Author’s interview, July 6).

According to Mirtskhulava, it will be important to pay attention to the leading GOC hierarchs’ positions on the crucial issue of recognizing the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church. Crucially, the Holy Synod decided to postpone the GOC’s final decision on this matter. But it is precisely the position on this issue that may signal the Georgian Church’s level of independence from Moscow.
Senior GOC clerics Bishops Ioseb (of Shemokmedi), Petre (of Chkondidi) and Grigol (of Poti and Khobi) have all publicly welcomed the granting of independence to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church earlier this year. A few standing members of the Holy Synod—Bishops Iakob Iakobishvili (of Bodbe), Zosime Shioshvili (of Tsilkani and Dusheti), Vakhtang Akhvlediani (of Tsurtavi), Dositheos Bogveradze (of Belgium and Netherlands), Saba Instkirveli (of North America) and Zenon Iarajuli (of Dmanisi and Agarak-Tashiri, the United Kingdom and Ireland)—have also expressed support at various times for granting autocephaly to the Ukrainian Church (Netgazeti.ge, September 12, 2018; Rustavi 2, December 25, 27, 2018; Facebook.com, December 23, 2018). But all other members of the 38-person Holy Synod, including Locum Tenens Metropolitan Shio, have so far refused to support the Ukrainian Church until after having “studied” the Universal Patriarch’s decision on the matter (Civil.ge, January 15)

New Scandal at Patriarchate of Georgian Orthodox Church

After the high-profile “Cyanide Case,” which resulted in the arrest of Archpriest Giorgi Mamaladze for an attempt to kill the Patriarch’s Secretary Shorena Tetruashvili, a new scandal has emerged at the Patriarchate of Georgia’s Orthodox Church.

Edisher Karchava, lawyer of the Patriarchate, claims that Metropolitan Petre Tsaava is trying to overthrow the Catholicos-Patriarch, Ilia II. Tsaava as metropolitan is the second highest ranking official of the church. He is a member of the Holy Synod and leads the strategically important Chkondidi diocese.

Karchava made several critical statements of the Metropolitan, accusing him of acting against the church. The lawyer says he will also present his evidence to the Holy Synod members at the next meeting and will request punishment for Tsaava.

Later, he was questioned by the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia about the issue. The lawyer says that he handed over evidence to the prosecutors proving that Petre Tsaava is acting against the Patriarch. «The Patriarch knew nothing of this proof,” he said. “What I am doing was not agreed with anyone beforehand.”

Father Tsaava says that the allegations towards him are “dirty slurs” and claims that he is the target of slander staged by a group of people inside the Patriarchate who want to rule the system. He says that the lawyer is acting on behalf of Shorena Tetruashvili, who the Metropolitan has accused many times of staging the Cyanide Case.

“I have never had any ill will for the Patriarch. Most of all, I fear that an insidious plan is being prepared against his holiness. The government should understand that this woman [Tetruashvili] is capable of anything,” Metropolitan said. He added that the lawyer cannot have any evidence that he is acting against the church or the Patriarch, as no such act has ever taken place.

The cleric doubts that the charges against him were raised to cover the Cyanide Case, the hearings of which have been closed to media and society recently.

The Patriarch has yet to comment on the latest scandal.

Deacon Kakhaber Gogotishvili says he was with Ilia II when the Patriarch learned of Karchava’s statements. He claims the Patriarch was not aware of the new developments within the church.

Georgian priest sentenced to nine years in prison for murder attempt

TBILISI, DFWatch–A Tbilisi court on Tuesday sentenced a high ranking cleric to nine years in prison for trying to kill the patriarch’s personal secretary with poison. The case has sent shock waves through Georgian society and revealed divisions within one of the country’s most popular institutions.

Archpriest Giorgi Mamaladze, who once was close to the head of the Georgian church, was found guilty of assassination attempt against the patriarch’s personal secretary and also of illegally possessing a firearm.

The archpriest pleaded not guilty and did not attend the final court hearings. Earlier, he rejected a jury trial.

The case has been dubbed ‘the Cyanide Affair’ by Georgian media because the priest was arrested at Tbilisi airport with cyanide in his luggage. He was about to leave for Berlin to meet with Ilia II, Catholicos Patriarch of Georgia, who was undergoing therapy at a hospital there.

Later, during a search of the archpriest’s home, a pistol was found.

Later, the prosecution released several videos ostensibly filmed by a friend of the priest who reported him to law enforcers and claimed he was planning to commit murder. At first the rumors circulated that the target was Patriarch Ilia II personally, but later the Prosecutor’s Office charged him with assassination attempt against Shorena Tetruashvili, the patriarch’s personal secretary, who reportedly has a lot of influence among the clergy.

Prosecutors claim Mamaladze viewed Tetruashvili as an obstacle to his career.

    Lia Ukleba, 42, Kutaisi

“I dreamed about studying in the Arts Academy since childhood, but my family members made me change my mind. The parents used to nag me: “Why would anyone want that?” or “Becoming an artist is useless, you should aim for being a teacher instead!”, and so on and so forth. Besides, the Academy was considered elite and it was a luxury to enroll there. I was just a village girl and did not stand a chance. So, I gave up. At the age of four, I was sure that I was an artist, but at the age of 24, I was not sure who I was because I got married at 16…

No woman has had it easy and, realistically speaking, we are not going to have it easy for some time in Georgia. My life too has had some painful moments, which need to be openly discussed.

LGBT rights: The film about gay love shaking up Georgia
    By Rayhan Demytrie
    BBC News, Tbilisi
    23 December 2019

Lasha and Beka describe leading a double life to avoid homophobic attacks

«When I told my mother I was gay, she said I wish you were dead or had never existed at all. It’s better not to have a son than to have someone like you.»

Lasha, in his early twenties, has his arm around his partner Beka’s waist. They are sitting together in a secluded park in Tbilisi.

These are not their real names because in Georgia gay couples often fear for their safety.

Discrimination against sexual orientation is illegal, but in reality homophobia is commonplace in Georgia’s conservative society. And frequently, gay people are victims of violence.

«If you are dressed differently people will start shouting ‘pederasts’ – to avoid it we have to blend in,» Lasha explains. The term «pederast» is widely used in former Soviet countries to insult homosexuals.

«We have to lead a double life. We hide our faces every day in order not to cause aggression among people in the streets,» adds Beka.

How film was condemned as ‘insult to Georgia’

Plenty of aggression was on display at the recent opening night of Georgia’s first feature film about gay love.

A crowd of about 500 men tried to force their way into a cinema in Tbilisi’s city centre to disrupt the screening of the Swedish-Georgian production, And Then We Danced.

Police in riot gear were brought in to prevent the violence escalating
Police, many of them in riot gear, formed a line between protesters and the cinema entrance.

Filmgoers were verbally, and in some instances physically, assaulted. Many of the protesters were wearing far-right insignia from the organisation Georgian March. Twenty-seven people were arrested.

Some people were hurt during the protest outside the cinema

Levan Vasadze, a well-known campaigner against LGBTQ events who was at the rally, said the film about two Georgian male dancers in love was an insult to the nation: «Shame on Georgia and on the government for allowing this historic shame on our dignity and Georgian traditions.»

But Giorgi Tabagari, a leading voice in Georgia’s LGBTQ community, argues the film is already helping to change public attitudes: «After criminals and drug addicts, we are at the bottom of the list when it comes to social acceptance. The film is having a huge impact on the Georgian public.»

I have seen a lot of public figures from culture, cinema and politics debating the issue. This was not the case two to three years ago

The Georgian Orthodox Church, the most trusted institution in the country and a leading voice against the LGBT community, distanced itself from the violence.

However, the Church said the film was an attempt to change «the consciousness» of the Georgian public and ultimately legalise «the sin» of homosexuality.

Church shaken by claims of homosexuality
Yet the Church has become embroiled in a homosexual scandal of its own. Just a few days before the film’s release, the Georgian public was stunned when, on live television, a bishop accused senior clergy of engaging in homosexual acts.

A cross is held up outside the cinema showing the film And Then We Danced
Bishop Petre Tsaava had just been ejected from the Holy Synod, the Georgian Orthodox Church’s Executive Council.

He told reporters that the reason for his expulsion was because he had exposed a culture of «pederasty and homosexuality» among the Church leadership.

Georgia’s Orthodox Church has denied all the allegations. Archpriest Andria Jaghmaidze said that any such behaviour in the Church was «impossible» and told the BBC that anyone found guilty of misconduct would be suspended from the priesthood.

Father Andria Saria has no problem with homosexuality but believes there is no place for gay priests
But the BBC has spoken to a priest who says homosexuality is commonplace within the Church.

Father Andria Saria is among a small circle of priests who have chosen to speak out against what they say is hypocrisy within the clergy.

«We have many problems in the Church and one of them is homosexuality. It’s the main problem that has become an open wound that needs to be treated,» he told the BBC.

«We are not against individuals and their lifestyles, but when it comes to a person who wants to be part of the Church, the Church categorically forbids priests being homosexuals and we are fighting precisely against homosexuality becoming a norm in the Church.»

‘They’re trying to destroy the Church’
In a statement, Georgian Orthodox Church spokesman Archpriest Andria Jaghmaidze said it was «impossible» for there to be any gay priests and that anyone found guilty of such misconduct «would be suspended from the priesthood».

Outside Tbilisi’s Sameba Cathedral, many churchgoers believe the allegations are part of a power struggle between senior members of the clergy.

«Never in my 51 years of life could I ever have imagined [homosexuality] was possible in the Church,» said Lamara Didebeli.

Aged 86, Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II is the head of the Georgian Orthodox Church and the most revered public figure in Georgia

«They’re trying everything to destroy the Georgian Orthodox Church but they won’t succeed as long as our patriarch is alive.»

Fellow churchgoer Giorgi Dundua admitted his surprise, but said that even if it was happening it should be resolved within the Church. «We don’t have the right to judge,» he said.

Tamar Gurchiani, a human rights advocate and law professor at Ilia State University, believes Georgian society is largely in denial about homosexuality in the Church.

«Hate and homophobia is so strong that people don’t really care about the facts and they don’t want to find out the truth. Maybe it’s because there are so many people in the government and in the Church who are themselves closeted.»

Sameba Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi
For Lasha and Beka, the gay couple in the park, the idea of homosexuality in the Church is not news at all, just as homosexuality in society is a reality that has to be accepted.

«Priests are ordinary people,» says Lasha. «Gay people exist everywhere, and of course they are in the Church as well. But in a country like Georgia, where this topic is taboo, they’re hiding inside their clerical clothing.»

They believe that as times change their country will become more comfortable with homosexuality and more gay Georgians will come out.
