Στις  3 Ιουνίου του 2016 ιερείς και μοναχές επικεφαλής φανατικών επιτέθηκαν σε ένα ροκ φεστιβάλ έξω από την Τυφλίδα: «Radical Priests, Orthodox Christian Activists Shut Down Tbilisi Rock Festival». Η Γεωργία συνεχίζει και σήμερα αυτές τις συμπεριφορές, παρά τις καταδίκες της από διεθνείς οργανώσεις δικαιωμάτων αλλά και από το ευρωπαϊκό Δικαστήριο: «Human rights court faults Georgia for its treatment of Jehovah’s», (10.2014).

Leaders of Georgia’s Orthodox Church gather to discuss poisoning plot
    by DFWATCH STAFF | Mar 5, 2017

TBILISI, DFWatch–When top clerics within the Georgian Orthodox Church gather for a Holy Synod on March 9, there are several difficult problems on their agenda, notably a priest accused of planning to murder someone in the patriarch’s inner circle.

Meupe Petre Tsaava, the Metropolitan of Chkondidi eparchy in Martvili municipality in western Georgia, has appeared on TV, claiming to expose a number of instances of corruption and other forms of wrongdoing inside the Patriarchy.

Tsaava further accused the patriarch’s personal secretary, Shorena Tetruashvili, of effectively pulling the strings in the Church and of having an informal authority that gives her influence over some of the clerics. According to some sources, Tetruashvili was the presumed target of archpriest Mamaladze’s alleged poisoning attempt.

Publicly airing criticism like Metropolitan Petre Tsaava has done represents a break with the traditions of the Georgian Church and no other higher cleric has either endorsed or confirmed his statements.

The Holy Synod consists of the patriarch, metropolitans, archbishops and bishops; 47 clerics altogether.,

Cleric’s shocking claim in TV interview triggers political crisis in Georgia

    Archbishop Iakob of Bodbe. (1tv.ge)

TBILISI, DFWatch–In Georgia, the government is embroiled in a scandal involving the Orthodox Church, after a bishop claimed the government tried to depose the highly respected Patriarch Ilia II.

Iakob, Archbishop of Bodbe Diocese, made the incendiary claim during an appearance on Pirveli TV on Saturday.

During the interview, the bishop, who is reportedly a former spiritual counsellor of Bidzina Ivanishvili, said he was invited to the office of then-PM Giorgi Kvirikashvili to discuss the removal of Ilia II, the head of the Georgian church and an extremely popular person in the country.

If this should happen, Patriarch Ilia II would be replaced by Metropolitan Shio, his appointed heir, Archbishop Iakob said.

Also present at the meeting were Giorgi Gakharia, then minister of internal affairs and currently prime minister, as well as Vakhtang Gomelauri, head of the State Security Service, the archbishop claimed during the interview with TV Pirveli.

All three categorically deny the accusations.

Although the archbishop doesn’t indicate the exact time of the meeting, it dates back to sometime between December 2015 and June of 2018, during Giorgi Kvirikashvili’s tenure as prime minister.

The statement has caused a public outcry in Georgia, with some downplaying its significance, pointing out that the archbishop seemed to be under the influence of alcohol during the interview.

On Monday, however, Archbishop Iakob repeated his claims while talking with journalists, adding that Giorgi Gakharia was the person most relentlessly insisting on the Patriarch’s replacement. Although apologizing for his ranting tone and incendiary language during the interview, he nevertheless stood by his previous statements about the meeting at the PM’s office.

Iakob Iakobashvili is the Archbishop of Bodbe Diocese. Until recently, he held the dual positions of the Patriarch’s Chorbishop and the Chair of Finance and Economic Council the Patriarchate, the governing body of the Georgian Orthodox Church. He said he resigned from both positions on Monday.

Archbishop Iakob was a personal spiritual counsellor of Bidzina Ivanishvili, at least until 2010, MP Eka Beselia said.

Clergy and government officials responded with anger and fiercely denied all allegations.

There is now talk within the Church of convening the Holy Synod to discuss the issue. The Synod is a convention of metropolitans and bishops and among its responsibilities is sanctioning high-ranking clerics.

The scandal surrounding Archbishop Iakob’s statements echoes a long-standing chasm in the Church between various groups who are trying to exert control over this popular and lucrative institution.

In November, 2017, Ilia II appointed Metropolitan Shio Mujiri as his potential heir. Although the Holy Synod has the final say in electing the next Catholicos-Patriarch, the move was assumed to be an expression of the will of the spiritual leader of the Georgian Orthodox Church, which it would be practically impossible to ignore.

The scandal has further marred the image of the Georgian Orthodox Church, which still struggles with the repercussions of the “cyanide affair”, a murder plot involving high-ranking clerics. Nevertheless, according to the latest opinion polls, the Church is still regarded by the public as most reliable institution in the country.

Cleric ‘forcefully removed’ from Holy Synod after ‘indecent’ accusation against Georgia’s Patriarch

Petre Tsaava surrounded by journalists at the gates of Patriarchate where a session of the Holy Synod was held. (1tv.ge)

TBILISI, DFWatch–A session of the Holy Synod in Tbilisi has shocked the entire nation, as one of its members accused the spiritual leader and most popular person in the country, Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II, of “pederasty”.

The accusation was so obscene and sudden that the dozens of journalists awaiting the results of the meeting outside of the gates of the Patriarchate, were literally taken aback.

Petre Tsaava, an outspoken Metropolitan of the important Chkondidi diocese in Megrelia, Western Georgia, said upon his exit from the Patriarchate that he’d been unfairly dismissed from his position after he “exposed the Synod chair of pederasty”. When asked whether he meant Ilia II, the Patriarch, he answered “yes”.

“[Metropolitan] Petre acted so indecently at the Holy Synod session that we had to [forcefully] remove him,” Metropolitan Nikoloz of Akhalkalaki said, commenting on the situation at the session.

He said the Holy Synod stripped Petre Tsaava of his diocese and advised him to redeem in a monastery.

Ilia II Shiolashvili, the Catholicos-Patriarch and spiritual leader of Georgian Orthodox Christians, is regarded as venerable and powerful. Even slight criticism of him sparks mass outcry and sometimes street protests in his support. Therefore, accusations of homosexuality in a very conservative country have shocked many Georgians.

In addition to its classical definition as a sexual relationship between an adult man and a pubescent or adolescent boy, in Georgian the term “pederasty” is used as an offensive term for gay people. When asked by Mtavari Channel what he literally meant, Petre Tsaava responded that he meant the former.

The incident has gone so far that even PM Giorgi Gakharia saw it necessary to comment.

“The Patriarch of Georgia is a symbol of the spirituality of our country, of our past, present and future. [Petre Tsaava’s statements are] absolutely unacceptable and I am sure that every citizen of our country will stand by our Patriarch today,” Giorgi Gakharia said during his trip to Turkey.

Ilia II called a session of the Holy Synod after Archbishop Iakob of Bodbe publicly blamed both the current and former prime ministers of Georgia had plotted to depose the Patriarch.

Archbishop Iakob’s claim was also discussed at the session but he managed to escape harsh punishment and retained his diocese.

The Holy Synod is the ruling body and highest authority in the Georgian Orthodox Church and consists of bishops.

Influential priest accuses Georgian Patriarch of ‘covering up sodomy’ in church

The Georgian church will also appeal to have a convicted priest released from prison after being convicted of attempted murder

One of the most influential clergymen of Georgia, Metropolitan of Chkondidi Petre was today expelled from the church service per the decision of the Holy Synod – the main council of the Georgian Orthodox Church).

Leaving the building of the patriarchate, Father Petre declared:

“Today, the Holy Synod made an unprecedented decision and personally the Patriarch, the chairman of the Synod, I believe that he made an unjust decision in depriving me of the rank. I think that this is because I uncovered the sin of sodomy and pederasty in the Georgian Orthodox Church,” Petre said.

When asked who he was talking about, Petre answered:

“The people have a Patriarch, possessed by the sin of pederasty and sodomy, the chairman of the Synod.”

Another decision that was made at today’s meeting of the Synod concerns Archpriest Giorgi Mamaladze.

Mamaladze has been in prison for two years; a Georgian court sentenced him to nine years in prison for preparing to murder Shorena Tetruashvili, the secretary-referent of the Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia, with poison. The Patriarchate is ready to appeal to the President of Georgia with a request to have Archpriest Mamaladze given amnesty.

Georgian archbishop accuses Patriarch Ilia II of ‘pederasty and sodomy’

A high ranking member of the Georgian Orthodox Church has accused the head of the Church, Patriarch Ilia II, and other high ranking church officials of having sexual activity with men, including underage boys.

Archbishop Petre Tsaava, a member of the Church’s ruling body, the Holy Synod, made the accusations on 31 October following a Synod meeting.

‘The Chair of the [Holy] Synod personally stripped me of archpriesthood, which I think was unjust. The reason behind it was my exposing of the sin of sodomy in the Georgian Church’, Tsaava told journalists after he walking out of the meeting.

‘The nation has a Chair of the Synod beset by the sins of pederasty and sodomy’, Tsaava added, before departing from the Patriarchate, the administrative body of Church where the Synod meeting was held.

The term pederasty refers to a sexual relationship between an adult man and a pubescent or adolescent boy. The term is commonly used in many countries of the former Soviet Union, including Georgia, to pejoratively describe queer men in general.

After the meeting was over, another Synod member, Archbishop Nikoloz Pachuashvili of the Akhalkalaki and Kumurdo Diocese, told journalists that the meeting got so heated that some Synod members had to physically shield Ilia II.

He said they ‘had to escort Archpriest Petre out from the Synod meeting by force’.

Another Holy Synod member, Archbishop Stepane, stated that Tsaava screamed and wagged his finger in front of Ilia II during the meeting.

Other synod members maintained that Tsaava’s allegations were ‘unfounded’.

Talking to TV channel Rustavi 2 later that day, Tsaava said he had wanted to introduce witnesses of his allegations at the Synod meeting, including ‘victims [of the] sin of sodomy’. He said some of them had sought psychological therapy.

He did not give specific details of the allegations nor did he mention if he was referring to acts allegedly committed by Ilia II or by others.

He reiterated his position again in an interview with opposition-leaning TV channel Mtavari Arkhi.

Petre Tsaava on TV channel Mtavari Arkhi.

‘Yes, I touched on this topic, the topic of pederasty. I apologise to viewers but a molester of a young man, a paederast, is a religious term, I can’t call it otherwise’.

Tsaava’s statement sent shockwaves through Georgia with many expressing surprise on social media not least due to the ambiguity of the allegations.

Soon after Tsaava’s first statement, Tamar Gamkrelidze, Hegumenia (abbess) of Saint Nino’s Monastery of Mothers in Martvili, doubled down, writing on Facebook that ‘the Patriarch has sacrificed the fate of the church to his own sodomy’.

‘It is tough to expose the Patriarch in the sin of sodomy. Father [Petre] had been trying to solve this problem within the Church for years, which unfortunately came to this result’, Gamkrelidze wrote.

Speaking to journalists after exiting the Synod meeting, Tsaava also said that the Holy Synod had decided to petition Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili to pardon Giorgi Mamaladze, the Georgian archpriest convicted of plotting the murder of the secretary of Ilia II, Shorena Tetruashvili.

Petre Tsaava has been the Archbishop of the Chkondidi Diocese, based in the west-Georgian towns of Martvili and Abasha, since 2007.

He became an outspoken critic of the Church leadership over alleged corruption and ‘moral sins’ after the 2017 cyanide scandal, for which archpriest Giorgi Mamaladze received a nine-year prison sentence.

Mamaladze was detained on 10 February 2017 after the authorities found sodium cyanide in his luggage as he was departing for a flight bound to Berlin, where Ilia II was undergoing surgery.

The court proceedings against Mamaladze were closed to the media and his lawyers were put under a gag order, barring them from speaking about the investigation publicly.

Tsaava supported Mamaladze’s claim from prison that he never intended to murder anyone, and that it was actually Tetruashvili who had asked him to purchase the cyanide.

Tsaava has maintained in recent years that Tetruashvili was the face of a ‘shadow government’ behind the ageing Ilia II, calling her a ‘Grey Cardinal’.

Both Mamaladze, through his letters from prison, and Tsaava in his statements, suggested several times publicly that unless the Synod helped to free Mamaladze, they would expose the ‘sin of homosexuality’ that was common among high ranking priests in the Georgian Orthodox Church.

Tsaava also earlier claimed that Mamaladze’s only wrongdoing was his plan to expose corruption under Archbishop Iakob Iakobishvili.

Iakobashvili himself had to resign as Chorbishop, an advisory role to the Patriarch, after scandalously claiming that top government officials sought his help to remove Ilia II from his throne.

In an op-ed for Publika, theologian and religious commentator Mirian Gamrekelashvili noted that the Holy Synod meetings have been held irregularly in recent years, but that Ilia II could not postpone holding the latest convention after controversy over the Cyanide case resurfaced again.

On 28 October, TV channel Pirveli made Giorgi Mamaladze’s latest letter from prison public. In the letter, Mamaladze accused Deputy Chief Prosecutor of Georgia Mamuka Vasadze of attempting to pressure him into naming Ilia II’s nephew, Metropolitan Dimitri Shiolashvili, and the former head of the Patriarch’s security service, Soso Okhanashvili as co-conspirators to the plot.

Mamaladze insisted that the government had managed to ‘neutralise’ Shiolashvili as a candidate to replace Ilia II.

Talking to online newspaper Batumelebi, Gamrekelashvili said that Mamaladze could be subject to prosecution due to evidence he had obtained that compromised those ‘surrounding of the Patriarch’ and Mamaladze himself.

‘Unspeakable’, ‘a crime bigger than murder’, ‘a crime of a moral-ethical nature’ — is how Mamaladze allegedly referred to a secret he threatened to make public in an earlier letter he sent to several archbishops from prison in February.

Archbishop Stepane told journalists after the Synod meeting on 31 October that Petre Tsaava tried to ‘blackmail’ Ilia II and the Synod with a letter that Mamaladze had allegedly kept outside of Georgia.

    ‘The problem is not homosexuality’
Speaking to OC Media, one of the founders and organisers of Tbilisi Pride, Giorgi Tabagari, said that he found it problematic that homosexuality was being used to discredit an individual.

‘They have become victims of the politics of hate and violence that they themselves contributed to strengthening […] ongoing conflicts within the Church show us again what LGBT individuals in Georgia have to go through’.

Tabagari said he hoped the Church would learn from the scandal and stop stigmatising and oppressing individuals based on their sexual orientation and gender identity.

Referring to the allegations of sexual violence against minors, he said ‘this has nothing to do with gender or sexual orientation.’

‘Violence is violence and if there was a case of paedophilia in the Georgian Orthodox Church, it should be investigated.’

Queer rights group Equality Georgia said in a statement that both ‘the Patriarchate’s hostile position towards the LGBT community and statements about homosexuality of the Head of the Church could sound scandalous but this should not distract us from remembering that we live in a secular state where homosexuality is not a crime and especially not a sin’.

Petre Tsaava insisted in his interviews that traditional Georgian Orthodox ecclesiastical law against ‘sodomy’ was not applied by the Synod, something he found unacceptable.

Gigi Ugulava from the opposition European Georgia party commented on the story at a press briefing the same day.

‘The problem is not homosexuality but the fact that the Church persecuted members of this vulnerable group [queer people] going after them with taburetkas in the name of God.’

The taburetka (a type of stool) became a symbol of anti-queer violence by clerics after a priest who chased queer rights activists on 17 May 2013 held a stool in his hands.

Irma Inashvili, head of the conservative opposition Alliance of Patriots parliamentary group, called for Petre Tsaava to be punished.

Inashvili accused Tsaava of being connected with liberal opposition groups including opposition parties the United National Movement and European Georgia, which she said sought to ‘destroy the Church’s authority’.

Georgian game of thrones – what’s happening in Georgian Orthodox Church?

TAMAR KADAGIDZE, TBILISI OCTOBER 30, 2019
According to one clergyman, the authorities, on behalf of the oligarch Ivanishvili, were going to overthrow Patriarch Ilia II

Last week, one of the most influential clergymen, Archbishop Jacob, accused the Georgian Prime Minister, as well as other senior officials, of trying to overthrow the head of the Georgian Orthodox Church, and high-ranking clergymen, of planning an attempt on the patriarch.

This sensational statement provoked a new church scandal that has engulfed the entire Georgian media.

    What did Archbishop Iakob say

The new church scandal erupted after one of the most influential clergymen, a member of the synod, Archbishop Jacob (Yakobashvili), on his own initiative, phoned TV channel Pirveli and said live on the air that senior government officials, including current Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, were trying to remove the head of the Georgian Orthodox Church – Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II.

According to the clergyman, a specific plan is being developed to this end, and is being backed and ordered by the informal leader of the country, billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili.

    Archbishop Iakob

In the conversation with TV Pirveli, Iakob said that he personally attended one of the meetings in 2016, at which authorities planned to remove the patriarch.

    • Capital of the Patriarchate: Property of the most influential institution in Georgia

    • A church scandal

    • Cyanide case. A real attack or the Patriarchate’s court games?

According to the clergyman, the meeting was held in the State Chancellery, in the office of the then Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili.

Iakob claims that the meeting was attended by the then head of the state security service Vakhtang Gomelauri (now the Minister of the Interior), the Minister of the Interior and the current Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, as well as businessman Vano Chkhartishvili.

Archbishop Iakob noted that it was Chkhartishvili who was charged with resolving the issue.

According to Iakob, the scandalous “cyanide case” was also prepared with the participation of the authorities.

The Cyanide Case is one of the most mysterious and scandalous criminal cases in the recent history of Georgia. The main figure involved is clergyman Archpriest Giorgi Mamaladze. Mamaladze has been in prison for two years, the court sentenced him to nine years in prison for preparing to murder Shorena Tetruashvili, the secretary-referent of the Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia.

Mamaladze was arrested in February 2017 at Tbilisi International Airport, from where he was about to leave for Germany. At this time, Patriarch Ilia II was undergoing treatment in Munich, and was accompanied by his entourage, including Shoren Tetruashvili.

According to the investigation, a powerful poison – sodium cyanide was found in Mamaladze’s baggage, and a pistol and cartridges were found in his house.

Initially it was announced that Mamaladze was going to poison the patriarch, but later this version was changed, and the investigation claimed that Shorena Tetruashvili was the intended victim.

According to Archbishop Iakob, the executors of the murder of the patriarch were to have been member of the Holy Synod, Metropolitan of Chkondidi Petre and Archpriest Giorgi Mamaladze. However, he did not say specifically who from the government was planning the murder.

Archbishop Iakob said the meeting in the chancellery named the future patriarch of Georgia as Archbishop Shio [now the locum tenens of the patriarch, appointed to this post by the patriarch himself in November 2017. This status means that in the event of the Patriarch’s incapacitation or his death, it is Archbishop Shio who will lead the Georgian church].

Iakob says that Archbishop Shio was chosen because of his proximity to the Russian Orthodox Church and his ties with Russia.

During the interview, Iakob often used slang words and obscene expressions and expressed threats against the enemies of the patriarch. Therefore, many had the impression that the clergyman was drunk. However, the next day, Iakob publicly repeated his accusations.

Yakobashvili also mentioned Bidzina Ivanishvili, the informal ruler of the country.

The clergyman hints that it was on his orders that a plan to overthrow the patriarch was prepared: while expressing threats against whomever put out the alleged hit on the patriarch, he mentioned a man who “considers himself the leader of the country.”

The authorities categorically denied the accusations of Archbishop Iakob.

Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia called the accusations of the clergyman ‘stupid’ and said that such a meeting had never been held either in his office or elsewhere. Kvirikashvili and Gomelauri also denied the allegations.

Iakob is one of the more controversial figures of the Georgian church. Prior to the scandalous television interview with TV Pirveli, he served as the head of the Financial and Economic Council of the Patriarchate. The day after the interview, he resigned from both posts. However, Archbishop Iakob remains the Archbishop of Bodbe, and a member of the Holy Synod.

“Today we no longer have a church, it’s a financial mafia cartel”
Many do not believe in the veracity of Iakob’s story.

However, regardless of the validity of the allegations, theologians say that the Georgian Orthodox Church is going through one of the most dramatic periods in its history.

When the clergy, members of the Holy Synod, accuse each other of organizing murders, corruption, criminal showdowns and intrigues, this indicates serious problems in the church, experts say.

From the patriarchy, which has always been one of the most closed institutions in the country, a real information stream has poured out:

The priests on their own initiative call in on live broadcasts, tell crime stories to reporters, use foul language, threaten to tell secrets, write revealing letters about each other. Indirect accusations were made of “sodomy and pedophilia” reigning inside the church.

According to observers, this is an irreversible process that will continue in the future and the patriarchy will no longer be able to restrain this flow of information.

Experts also argue that the struggle for the successor to the elderly patriarch is entering a decisive phase.

Some of them argue that one of the main participants in this struggle is the government, and it is the government, in particular the informal ruler of the country, Bidzina Ivanishvili, who is behind the processes in the church.

“The strongest side of Ivanishvili’s rule is that there is nothing scandalous in him, nothing shocking and overwhelming – everything is worthless, everyone is equally extinct in the mud, all are miserable. In the era of Ivanishvili, even immorality that crossed all borders, any crimes, the most vile deeds, was put on the conveyor. Even terrifying evil has become commonplace,” clergyman Beka Mindiashvili writes on his Facebook page.

The clergyman also speaks of problems within the church. Archpriest Ilia Chigladze writes on his Facebook:

“Today we no longer have a church, it’s a financially mafia cartel.”

The priest blames the situation on the patriarch.

“I was shocked to hear the interview of Archbishop Iakob. Staying in such a church is becoming increasingly unbearable and shameful. Responsible, of course, is the head of the church, that is, the Catholicos-Patriarch, given the ugly personnel policy that he pursued for many years, because of which we found ourselves in this situation today,” the archpriest wrote on social media.

Part of the opposition and the liberal-minded public see positive signs in this process and believe that the church has long needed more transparency.

“Everyone blames each other, and this process should go to the end. Religious morality is not just a religious category, it is also a legal category, and therefore it is important for us. In the name of religious morality, the church appeals to the courts and forbids people to [use their] freedom of expression,” said Tamar Kordzaia, representative of the Republican Party.

She recalls the case of a Georgian condom-producing company, against which the patriarchy has filed a lawsuit for ‘insulting the feelings of believers’ because of the images on the packaging.

“There is no area where the patriarchy would not intervene in the name of religious morality. For years, the church has been fighting against equality and progress in the country, discriminating against people, telling them that if they are homosexual, they should not come out. But if they do it [are homosexual] themselves, we need to know about it,” says Kordzaia.

    The letter of the Archpriest
In the context of Jacob’s interview, a letter written by the prisoner Archpriest Mamaladze earlier this year became relevant again.

The content of the letter was never made public. It is only known that it contains a cascade of scandalous information. Starting with corruption and financial fraud of clergy, ending with “sodomy and pedophilia.”

At the same time, Archbishop Jacob declares that Giorgi Gakharia, as Minister of the Interior, gathered incriminating evidence on the clergy, secretly establishing observation of them.

Some of the journalists also confirm these words, based on their own sources. They say that they have information that in the hands of Gakharia there are a lot of scandalous videos with the participation of clergy.

One of the main topics of discussion now is whether Mamaladze’s letter should be published.

This issue has even split the liberal public.

Some believe that the letter should be published, because the flock has the right to know who ‘speaks on behalf of God.’

When, in the name of religious morality, clergymen publicly persecute representatives of the LGBT community, but at the same time represent the same community, society should be aware of this, part of the liberal-minded public believes.

The other part considers that the disclosure of information on sexual orientation is unacceptable, because it is an attempt to interfere in personal life, and it does not matter whether the person is secular or a clergyman. Proponents of this point of view consider it immoral to fight with priests by their own methods.

    The meeting of the Synod
Due to the situation, the patriarchy decided to hold an extraordinary meeting of the Holy Synod.

It will take place on October 31 at 12:00.

The Holy Synod is a meeting of priests of the Georgian church who make decisions on the governance of the church. The Holy Synod is headed by the head of the church (Catholicos-Patriarch). The 46 members of the synod are the most influential clergy.

Traditionally, the synod meets twice a year: after Easter and during the Christmas fast.

However, this schedule has long been disrupted. The last meeting of the Synod took place in December last year.

According to the theologians, the synod is not convened due to problems in the church and avoids discussing them.

One of the reasons is also that the Georgian church is in no hurry to recognize the autocephaly [ed. read – independence from Moscow] of the Ukrainian church.

Archbishop Jacob will also take part in the meeting of the Synod as Bishop of Bodbe. Archbishop Peter is also expected to attend, whom Iakob has accused of preparing the murder of the patriarch.

Clergymen believe that the meeting of the synod will not help resolve the situation and that the authority of the church will continue to collapse, as the situation has already gone out of control.

“And the end is likely to be fatal, since the taboo has been lifted from various topics. The church will be in an even more uncomfortable position, because it is not fighting with problems within itself, but with those who openly talk about these problems,” said clergyman Giorgi Tiginashvili.

    _______________

    • 86-year-old Patriarch Ilia II rarely appears in public due to health problems. Not only the fate of the church, but also, in some way, the vector of the country’s domestic and foreign policy depends on who takes the seat of the head of the patriarchate after the death of Ilia II.

    • The church is the most influential institution in Georgia, more than 80 percent of the population trusts the patriarch, and this figure remains unchanged in all polls. The personal authority of Ilia II is named as one of the reasons for the special popularity of the church in Georgia.

    • Relations between the state and the church in Georgia are traditionally based on mutual interests – the church, in exchange for support, expects economic dividends from the government, and for politicians, proximity to the patriarch and posing against a background of lit candles and icons are a sure way to quickly win the hearts of voters and guarantee a successful career.

    • The Orthodox Church is one of the richest and most well-organized structures in Georgia. Every year it receives about 25 million lari (about 8.5 million dollars) from the central budget. According to the public registry, the patriarchy also owns a huge amount of real estate. The church today owns and operates more than 62.7 square kilometers of land, which is approximately equivalent to the territory of the city of Batumi.

      October 31st, 2019

A session of the Holy Synod in Tbilisi has shocked the entire nation, as one of its members accused the spiritual leader and most popular person in the country, Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II, of “pederasty”.
